Metrics that matter pt. 1

The developer productivity metrics you should measure.

This is a short series of some important developer productivity metrics. These will give you important insights into how your engineering team us functioning.

The first is rather simple:

pull requests per engineer

Most source code control systems can track this easily.

On a development line, this metric can reveal when an individual developer has stalled out.

It can also be a signal that developers are collectively struggling.

Alone, this metric isn’t extremely useful, but it can be used to understand what’s going on at a high level.

A quick pulse check.

By no means should this metric be used to gauge individual developer performance.

We’re not necessarily after more pull requests.

But keeping tabs on this month over month will give you a way to see how your developer productivity efforts are helping (or hurting) your engineers.

More useful metrics to come!

Best,

Andre
