More on qualitative metrics

Is measuring developer sentiment only for snowflakes?

The developer walks into the room and lies down on a leather couch.

A quiet man walks in and sits next to him.

The developer answers a bunch of questions with the inevitable follow-up question:

“…and how does that make you feel?”

Perhaps that’s what you think developer sentiment is like?

A useless measure of feelings collected by some big brained quack.

Well…

It’s not 🙂

As I’ve said before, developer sentiment is much more than feelings.

Qualitative metrics tend to get a bad wrap.

If it’s not hard data collected automatically, it’s useless…right?

In fact, qualitative data is actually quite useful and, if collected correctly, very accurate.

Your devs are the boots on the ground, the ones in the trenches.

They have a unique perspective that can provide a deep insight into how your software development program is working.

Or

Not working.

The generic yearly employee engagement survey isn’t enough either.

I’m talking about developer-specific questions that get to the heart of the issues.

Even if you know the top problems that your devs are struggling with, asking specific questions aimed at development yields an even deeper level of understanding.

Maybe even uncover more problems that you didn’t know you had.

So what exactly should you ask your devs?

…more to come

Best,

Andre
