Too much of a good thing

Can it actually be dangerous to over-measure developer productivity metrics?

Yes.

In last week’s short “Metrics that matter” series, I wrote about a few simple metrics that can shine a bright light into developer productivity.

(I will expand on this series from time to time)

The operative word was “few.”

Measuring too many metrics and trying to create too much progress can actually be detrimental to your organization.

This is something that I struggle with from time to time.

Like cleaning every room of the house simultaneously…

It never ends up getting done.

When you’re starting down the developer productivity path, pick a few metrics and stick with them.

As you go, try and learn everything that these few metrics tell you.

Once you understand the nuances, it is much easier (and more productive) to add a few more metrics.

Also

Do not focus on only technical metrics (e.g. DORA), be sure to include subjective metrics as well (e.g. developer sentiment)

Quantitative AND qualitative.

Best,

Andre
